Mochi is a rice cake made from glutinous rice, and is used to make many of the Japanese sweets, Wagashi served with tea. Mochitsuki is the traditional process of making Mochi.
Mochi ice cream is relatively new, having started in the early 80's in Japan. It's a ball of mochi with an ice cream core available in a variety of flavors. Recently we started carrying the green tea mochi from Bubbies, a Hawaiian company. A Japanese sweet using tea; all the excuse I needed to consume a whole box. You know, for research.
The outer layer is chewy, doughy, and the ice cream, well, it's ice cream, sweet, creamy and tastes of awesomeness with a very distinct green tea profile. It tastes like they use food grade matcha, and not just powdered sencha. A unique and fun treat.

When I first saw that picture I thought you had made green tea hard-boiled eggs. Thank you so much for not doing that.
I find a lot of products containing matcha they market as "green tea" here in the States.
i second that. hard boiled eggs smell so bad, they should be illegal- and never, ever associated with something as lovely as tea.
wherever did you find this treat? i think i need to test some out for myself.
Hah! When *I* first saw the picture, I thought you'd made homemade matcha ice cream, then fashioned them into perfectly smooth ovaloids. I was thoroughly impressed by your culinary prowess...
And then I discovered you had your grocer's freezer to thank. Boo!
lol, it's like a game, "What is This Picture?!"
Every time I see those green globules, I want to take a big chewy bite out of one. ARRGH
I love that glutinous rice stuff. They make so many great cakes with it in Taiwan.
Bubbie's mochi ice cream is some of the greatest stuff on earth. Not just their green tea flavor, but also their sakura and - oh! - passion fruit.
Have you tried to make mochi ice cream yourself? I have found the mochi ice cream recipe but i'm not sure whether to try it out or not.
MY GOSH! My favorite!
Green tea mochi is the best of both worlds!
